Observation reveals that people can be grouped into two marketing types:
Planners and Doers. This may seem simple and maybe even a bit stereotypical but just take a look at their descriptions.
Planners – you have to love them…or not. They always need to have a plan. They think, analyze, request more data and then reassess their assessment. Then when something changes they have a moment of panic and deep breathing and then they get back to work. They go back to their plan, review it, and tweak it where necessary. These type of folks plan and plan and plan and plan and yet get very little done.
Doers – are exhausting at times. They have to be doing something – anything- actually. As long as they are moving and seeing visual progress they are happy. They are excitable, have great ideas, energetic and generally fun to be around. They infect other people to jump on the bandwagon and soon everyone around them are “Doing”.
The problem lies whether the Doers are doing the right things. Are they consistent with strategy and business objectives? Are they integrating with other activities going on? Are their activities repeatable? Can they grow over time?
The point is, you need both Planners and Doers in order to get things done. Not everyone can walk the tightrope between planning and doing. And that’s the biggest issue – the lack of balance between strategy and tactics.
There is a saying, “If you slow down, you will go faster.” How many times do you wish you’d just taken a minute to think something through before you jumped in?
So, how about you ….are you a planner or a doer or maybe a little of both?
