#Sunday #Snippet Journey to Freedom

Today's Sunday Snippet is from my first book Journey to Freedom. Set before and during the American Civil War, this book travels and provides drama and action throughout.

After Clarrissa had disappeared from his sight, Mike walked to the back of the house. On the porch hung a swing. He tested his weight on it carefully, and when he realized it would hold it, he sat, lost in thought.
He thought about his daughter and how beautiful she was. Long hair and pretty brown eyes. She looked just like her mother, Ellie. He hadn’t thought about her in a long time. He closed his eyes and could smell the faint fragrance of the perfume she used to wear. She had laughed when he said she wore too much. She had told him that “a woman can never wear enough perfume,” and she had dabbed on more. It was true—that was one of the reasons he had been attracted to her. For him, it had been immediate.
Ellie was the only child in her family, and that meant she was used to getting what she wanted. Her father, even though he was a slave, had managed a large plantation and lived very well. Her father had never liked him, Mike mused. He even had cut off contact with him after Ellie had died, hadn’t even cared about Angel anymore, refusing to see her. Mike had always wondered why, and now he thought it was because Angel looked too much like Ellie.
Angel had thought her grandfather walked on water—until he deserted her.
